Case Study 6: DESI DAAWAT REDESIGN #7
Desi daawat is a website that consists of food dishes prepared by two amazing chefs- Divya and Misty. Their website aims to tell the recipes of mostly every cuisine. They want to help the busy moms and also everyone who wants to become a cook with their incredible recipes and explanation.
What did the client want?
1. Names on the website
2. Control the adding of the recipes
3. Monetize the website
4. Edit recipes
You have come to the right place if you are a designer(does not matter if you are starting or you are professional). Here, I have shared my ideas and logic behind adding some of the features to a recipe website. This website indulged me to do a lot of research as it was not common for us to go to such websites on a daily basis as we do for an e-commerce website.
Current design - Desi Daawat:

There are many issues with this landing page. Some of them are:
>The top nav has a lot to offer plus they are all clustered which gives a bad UX experience.
>Their elevator pitch(EP) on the right is pretty simple and not very catchy. As a user, I would not want to read it, unless there are some pictures or the font is different.
>Apart from this, the category selection is below the EP, which has been given very little preference. Whereas, as this is a recipe website, it must have been on the top for those who really wish to see the recipes first.
>The users are shown only one recipe on this big screen and it would take a lot of scrolling just to go through 5–6 recipes. This is a bad UX as there are pretty fewer options for me. I mean, the images used are pretty clear but it covers mostly the screen, which is not right.
The old bottom nav looked something like this:

This old design had not many screens to offer. For me, the challenge was to make those screens catchy and also for people to see many dishes according to their preferences. So that this website is not just to show some of the text and images, but also to make it more interactive to increase the traffic. Right now, the website had nothing to get the information of the users, which is of no use for the website. Keeping all of this in mind, I designed every page.
MY REDESIGN: Read the points below for this design
IDEATION: Introduction to the chefs, who are behind all the recipes must be shown to everyone who is coming to this website. Rather than infinite scrolling, there must be pagination for people to remember where they have seen a particular recipe. I have added 2 different card views so it doesn’t look boring.

Here, I have done a few changes:
>I chose a color palette for this website- Orange
>Differentiated Veg(green) and Non-Veg(red) recipies
>Elevator pitch and also the introduction of the two chefs on the top
>Included pagination
>“Show recipe” button: Clarity of speech
The next section is: Favorites Section
IDEATION: Whatever the user clicks on the favorite icon, all the recipes will go to this list and can refer at any time.

Now, the next big focus was to add the advanced search for those who believe in finding what they want rather than looking for things that are unnecessary. Here is how I added the advanced search on top of the screen, just below the Top nav.
IDEATION: Either the user can search the dish or they can search by different types, cuisines, ingredients, festivals, or lifestyles.

The next best feature I included for them as per their need was: LIVE CLASSES. This required a lot of research, to fit what is necessary for the user and for the admin as well. My design for the LIVE Classes feature looks like this:
IDEATION: The admin can easily start/schedule a live session by just adding a few information. Below this, there are the other live sessions where people can watch it later on.

The next section that I had to design was the ABOUT US page. This is a very important page where the users connect with the people who are behind the website.
IDEATION: To add some images of the owner so as to connect with their audience and make them feel comfortable. The real stories are genuine and create a sense of warmth with the users. This included their vision and mission behind this website which is short and clear.

These all were the pages/screens for the new website design. I also designed some of the dialog boxes that could pop on for the users to fill in some information. You can see below:
Adding images gives a touch of the theme of this website related to food.

These are mostly all the designs for this website redesign. I hope you must have enjoyed the process and the reasons behind the design decision I have made.
I am open to criticism and would be happy to do further changes to this design project. If you’ve reached the bottom, then I must tell you, my friend, you have a lot of patience and maybe my designs have created a positive impact on you.
If you want to talk about design, let’s chit chat. I am up for it anytime.
